The City Attorney is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the City Commission. Serving as the chief legal consultant and advisor for the City, the City Attorney is responsible for providing legal counsel to the City Commission, City Manager, regarding legal matters; directing legal activities and providing leadership and general administration for the legal department; providing a full range of legal services to the City including preparation of legal opinions, research and support, representation in legal actions, document preparation; identify and remedy potential legal complications for the City, and defends and advocates the City's position with the goal of achieving that which is in the best interest of the City and its citizens, and contributing as a member of the City's executive management team on strategy and policy to ensure the City's mission and core values are incorporated into operational activities and services.
Requirements
What you need to be successful
To excel as the City Attorney with the City of Richmond requires a strong knowledge and application of the principles of civil and criminal law, the methods and practices of pleadings in criminal cases and in civil cases, and the statutory provisions related to the authority and operation of municipalities. Excellent oral communication and written skills for explaining legal issues and options, as well as complex legal principles and regulations, to clients and to garner their compliance, and the ability to demonstrate leadership, including consensus-building to resolve conflicts, negotiate agreements, and gain cooperation among competing interest groups.
Adaptability is key, as your role may involve shifting between different tasks and projects throughout the day. Lastly, a commitment to continuous learning will support your growth and enhance your contributions to the City of Richmond.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Formal Education:
Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school.
Relatable Work Experience:
Five (5) to eight (8) years' experience with municipal law is required.
Training (License and/or Certification):
State Bar of Texas Licensure
Valid Texas Driver's License
